New Social Media Network: About.Me

Updated on March 1, 2015

At age 16 I was a volunteer at a hospital bacteriology lab. I became a chemist for U.S. government. Then I studied health & related fields.

This was written December 29, 2011. This is about a new social media network that is growing fast. Unlike other ones, this is mostly for your professional life or promoting yourself, hence its name: about.me

It is already growing faster than Facebook was growing when it was this size. It is free right now. Unlike other social media network, this gives you a lot more control of what appears on it. Your profile can be as small or big as you want.

It has at the top a place for icons of the other social media networks that you are in. You can leave to anywhere you want even to certain articles (hubs) on hub-pages. Because it is new, you have more chance of getting the name that you want on it.

Like when I joined Twitter I could not use the name whizkid so I had to settle for whizkid7. But on this I was able to get whizkid: http://about.me/whizkid It is not something that you spend a lot of time on continuously. You just set it up and then you can use it like your online business card or website if you do not have one.

On mine I have some articles that I have on Hub-Pages on it. Since I have new ones I will change the ones on it. But here is the most important thing about this website now. On the other ones like Facebook or Twitter, when you put links on them, the code on it tells search engines not to follow these links.

On about.me the search engines do follow the links on it. Just follow the instructions to put up your page and then you not need to spend any more time on it. Go to my page above to sign up. But like I said earlier, this site is not for fun or to waste time but for your professional life. What does professional mean. It means getting paid money for something.

The opposite to this would be amateur which means that you are not getting paid for it like with the Olympics and the AAU- Amateur Athletic Union. You can put tags on about.me so people doing a search for a specific thing can find you.
