How to Avoid or Cure the Flu or Colds
Girl with the flu. Difference between cold, flu and allergies.
Colds and the Flu are Optional
Is vitamin D better for colds and flu than vitamin C. See video below with California’s Premier Endocrinologist, Joe Prendergast M.D.
He explains that vitamin D is really a hormone and that is why it is so powerful. He says that taking vitamin D increases your immune system strength 3 to 5 times. He says "Vitamin D is a miracle drug."
November 12, 2013 New Addition
There is no evidence that any influenza vaccine thus far developed is effective in preventing or mitigating any attack of influenza. The producers of these vaccines know that they are worthless, but they go on selling them, anyway.
------Dr. J. Anthony Morris (formerly Chief Vaccine Control Officer at the FDA). This is from Dr. Morris page and Flu Shot? Forget It by Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D. Note the CDC says that thimerosal with mercury is in the multi-dose vaccine, not the single-dose flu vaccine. Dr. Connealy says on this article:
A strong immune system is one of the best ways to protect against getting the flu in the first place.
CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) under Seasonal Influeneza (Flu) says:
Since seasonal influenza vaccine is produced in large quantities for annual immunization campaigns, some of the vaccine is produced in multi-dose vials, and contains thimerosal to safeguard against possible contamination of the vial once it is opened.
The single-dose units are made without thimerosal as a preservative because they are intended to be opened and used only once.
Joel Fuhrman M.D. writes in his book, Super Immunity (see book below), that the risks of getting the flu shot include anaphylaxis and hives, neurological disorders such as encephalitis, nephritis and optic neuritis, demylentating disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Gullian-Barre syndrome and Henoch-Schonlein purpura. End of addition.
This is about the best way to avoid the flu and colds. I used to get them a lot but now I do not get them anymore. What makes the difference is your immune system. On this website, links are in blue. You can right click the BACK button to see a menu of the webpages that you were on.
This was written in November 2011. I have not had a a cold or flu in many years. It is the same with a friend of mine that has a very healthy lifestyle.
I did spend years experimenting with my theory. I would go a couple of years without getting sick, then I would do things so I would get backed up with toxins and I would get sick. My best trick for getting backed up with toxins was to drink a lot of eggnog.
My uncle is a PhD in chemistry and he taught me to think like a scientist at a very young age. So his experiment was to see what would happen if someone grew up thinking like a scientist. Make sure to see the section below about curing a tooth infection.
Immune System not Germs
Louis Pasteur is considered the father of the Germ Theory of Medicine and he invented the process of pasteurization. On his death bed, he even recanted saying the Germ Theory was all wrong: "It’s the terrain, not the germ."
If the immune system is not compromised it can easily prevent you from getting sick. Plus it can help you avoid infectious diseases and non-infectious diseases like cancer. Washing hands is like always running away and hiding from germs. Strengthen your immune system and you can survive a pandemic while others are dropping like flies. Germs are everywhere.
The human is the most evolved organism on the planet. Some have disagreed but the purpose of evolution is to survive. Many species of organisms have become extinct in recent years. The population of humans have continually grown for the past 10,000 years unlike any other species. Its immune system if healthy can easily fight off any infectious disease.
If you do get sick and follow the advice below instead of taking drugs like Lance Armstrong did, you will be healthier than you were before the cold or flu. Take drugs and you could end up like Brittney Murphy, Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston. For more on this see my article: The Worst Things for Health. It has been observed that dairy consumtion contributes to respiratory problems including the flu and colds.
The body actually allows any virus to grow in you when it does not think that you are taking care of yourself and not getting enough rest and sleep. The biggest problems with Americans is that they over-eat and under-sleep. That is why the body allows the virus to grow in you, to kick your butt so you have to take it easy.
Vitamin D-- the Sunshine Hormone
First there is a lot of recent research done showing the importance of vitamin D, the sunshine hormone. In the summer, the sunshine is brighter and people have on less clothes so they get more vitamin D.
A lot of research shows that taking vitamin D supplements works almost as good as getting it from sunlight. There are no good food sources of it. Andrew Weil M.D. says:
Increasing the amount of vitamin D in the body can prevent or help treat a remarkable number of ailments, from obesity to arthritis, from high blood pressure to back pain, from diabetes to muscle cramps, from upper respiratory tract infections to infectious disease, and from fibromyalgia to cancers of the breast, colon, pancreas, prostate and ovaries.
Please note that at the latitude of Boston, there are 3 months of the year when you cannot get any vitamin D from the sun. So you should be taking several thousand IUs of vitamin D daily to prevent a cold or flu or to fight one off. In the last 3 years 7 MDs have written 7 books on vitamin D! You can get one of them and learn about how vitamin D can help you prevent other disease like cancer. In December 2010 the RDA of vitamin D was tripled.
They have recently learned that the amount needed for strong bones is not nearly enough to protect you from the above. Vitamin D overdose is rare. If you buy 1,000 IU capsules and take 70 a day for a while, then you will get an overdose. To be very conservative do not take more than 15,000 IU a day, unless a doctor is supervising you. See How Much Vitamin D Should You Take Daily. See how it arrives at 8,000 IU daily of vitamin D.
See Many Health Benefits of Vitamin D for more things that vitamin D can do. Video below has Joe Prendergast M.D., California’s Premier Endocrinologist, talking about how good vitamin D is. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone and endocrinologists deal with hormones. He says on the video that enough vitamin D strengthens the immune system 3 to 5 times. He also explains why no one gets too much. Dr. Prendergast cites a study by German researchers, who have found that vitamin D increases your immune function by a factor of 3 to 5.
Take a Look at This
Wikipedia has a webpage called Vitamin D and Respiratory Infections (like colds and the flu). It says:
A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that people with the lowest blood vitamin D levels reported having significantly more recent colds or cases of the flu chronic respiratory disorders, especially those who had pre-existing respiratory ailments. A report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that children who took vitamin D3 supplements daily in winter were 42% less likely to get infected with seasonal flu than those who were given a placebo. Mongolian schoolchildren who drank vitamin D fortified milk during winter reported having fewer colds than those who received non-fortified milk..
There is another video by John Cannell M.D. on that article (Many Health Benefits of Vitamin D) where he explains that people taking 5,000 IU of vitamin D a day do not get the flu. Also for more on the best way to get this steroid hormone D and detoxification see Many Health Benefits of Sunbathing.
Plenty of Sleep
Also getting plenty of sleep is important to the immune system. A study showed that people who get less than 7 hours of sleep a night are 3 times more likely to get the flu than people who get over 8 hours of sleep a night. During the holidays people have a tendency to get less sleep.
Here is an article on webmd.com called The Common Cold: 7 Things that Make Your Cold Symptoms Worse. It says:
2. Not sleeping enough. Getting enough sleep is key for a healthy immune system. One study found that sleeping less than 7 hours a night almost triples your risk of getting a cold in the first place. If your cold symptoms keep you up at night, try to go to bed earlier or take naps during the day. You need extra rest, however you get it.
Here is a recent study that shows that while you are sleeping the brain cleanses itself of toxic waste including dementia causing chemicals. It says:
“Sleep puts the brain in another state where we clean out all the byproducts of activity during the daytime,” said study author and University of Rochester neurosurgeon Maiken Nedergaard. Those byproducts include beta-amyloid protein, clumps of which form plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
Here is another article on this in case the above one gets lost called Sleep: The Ultimate Brainwasher. It says:
The new study, by Maiken Nedergaard and colleagues at the University of Rochester in New York, provides what Charles Czeisler, a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School in Boston, calls the “first direct experimental evidence at the molecular level” for what could be sleep’s basic purpose: It clears the brain of toxic metabolic byproducts.
Lymphatic System and Exercise
The cleaner that it is inside the body, the better the immune system works. Everyday the body is taking in toxins and producing metabolic toxins. Also everyday the body is cleaning out toxins. A big part of the immune system is the lymphatic system. But it requires movement to work well. So exercise will help it to work much better.
Warm Weather Means More Sweating
When it it is warmer, the body sweats more and the skin is the largest excretory organ in the body. The excretory organs include skin, lungs, liver and kidneys. The colon is an organ of elimination.
Also exercise helps you to sweat more. This helps the body to become cleaner inside. Sweating is also a major reason that people get colds and flu during the cold months instead of the warmer months. You can sweat more in cold weather by exercise, taking hot bathes, saunas or doing Bikram's Hot Yoga (they keep the temperature above 100 degrees F).
Here is inofrmation on a study done from PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Regular sauna bathing and the incidence of common colds. They had a group of 50 people and had 25 of them take saunas. This report says:
In both groups the frequency, duration and severity of common colds were recorded for six months. There were significantly fewer episodes of common cold in the sauna group. This was found particularly during the last three months of the study period when the incidence was roughly halved compared to controls.
Scientology has the the Purification Rundown. It cleanses the body of toxins. They gave it for free to the firefigters during 9/11 who got many toxins in their body from all the toxins in the air. During it one spends 4 hours a day in a sauna with a temperature of 140 degrees for 2 or 3 weeks. I did it for 2 weeks since that is how long it took to do its job. This causes a huge amount of sweating. Wikipedia says:
The Purification Rundown, also known as the Purif or the Hubbard Method, is a controversial detoxification program developed by Scientology's founder L. Ron Hubbard and used by the Church of Scientology as an introductory service. Scientologists consider it the only effective way to deal with the long-term effects of drug abuse or toxic exposure.
Here is a government study about the above called Persistent organic pollutants in 9/11 world trade center rescue workers: reduction following detoxification. It says:
Firefighters, paramedics, police and sanitation crews are among the approximately 40000 personnel who labored for weeks and months on rescue and cleanup efforts. Many of the rescue workers have subsequently developed symptoms that remain unresolved with time.
This study characterizes body burdens of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated dioxins (PCDDs) in rescue workers and citizens exposed following the WTC collapse.
Our research includes a pilot evaluation of a detoxification method aimed at reducing toxic burden. Many congeners were found at elevated levels, in ranges associated with occupational exposures. Post-detoxification testing revealed reductions in these congeners and despite the small study size, some reductions were statistically significant. Health symptoms completely resolved or were satisfactorily improved on completion of treatment.
- 2. a minor chemical constituent, esp. one that gives a distinctive character to a wine or liquor or is responsible for some of its physiological effects.
Fasting or Eating Less
When Mark Twain would get a cold or flu, he would fast to get over it the quickest way. Fasting helps the body to get rid of toxins at an accelerated rate. Regular fasting can help you to avoid it. Fasting (consuming only water) is the fastest way to get over the flu. You will also have deeper sleep. If a pandemic hits and everyone around you is dying, then fast just like Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Gandhi and Mohammad did so you can survive.
The famous health enthusiast, Patricia Bragg fasts (only pure water-- nothing else) every Monday and the 3 days at the beginning of every month. Do the math and that is fasting one week every month. Then she also does a 7 to 10 day fast every 3 months. Fasting causes your immune system to become much more powerful. See Many Benefits of Fasting.
Her father, Paul Bragg also did this. He is the main person that started the health movement in America. Singer Katy Perry has been using the Bragg system of health since age 10. For more on what they teach, see Your 9 Wonderful Life-Changing Doctors. This information comes from their book The Miracle of Fasting. One of these doctors is fasting. They say that you do not catch a cold but develop a cold.
Some like to do a lesser fast that is easier to handle like a juice fast or the lemonade diet where you only drink fresh lemon juice in water with maple syrup added. A little cayenne hot pepper goes in it for people that can handle it. For a lot of information on fasting, with quotes about it from 23 medical doctors (MDs), see Lemonade Diet, Fasting and Juice Fasting.
Raw fruits and vegetables, organically grown, are a very clean burning fuel. Unhealthy foods like junk food, cakes, cookies, refined grains and animal foods are not as clean burning and make it harder for the immune system to work. So fasting or a cleansing diet helps the body to keep from getting sick. Also stress weakens the immune system so do something like yoga to reduce stress.
A cold or flu is a chance for you to become healthier. The body has an inner intelligence that only cares about the health of your body, It does not care about your money, your job, your ego, your relationships or any of that. So you may be too busy being important to get enough sleep or you do not want to be bothered with eating less or healthier. But when you gets sick it becomes a priority since you feel so sick.
Then you can take off work, get more rest and sleep and let your body heal itself. It is time to nurture yourself. Also your taste does not work as well so you cannot enjoy eating like normal. This makes it easier for you to eat less or fast. Fasting may make you feel worse but it will speed up the process that is taking place. Eating may make you feel better, but it slows down the cleansing process that is taking place.
Some people choose to fight the flu. They do not give the body what it needs but they try to SUPRESS the symptoms with drugs or natural remedies. Then these people can end up being sick for weeks or even months. The body is talking to you. It is saying "give me what I need or you will feel awful for a long time." Only the body can heal itself.
Have you heard the saying "Feed a cold, starve a fever." Here is what Duke Medicine says about that saying (Duke Medicine conceptually integrates the Duke University Health System, the Duke University School of Medicine, and the Duke University School of Nursing.):
No one really knows the origins of the axiom, but most accounts link it back as early as 1574, when dictionary writer John Withals wrote “Fasting is a great remedie of feuer [fever].”
Curing a Tooth Infection (also Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever origins)
The above theory about colds and flu did not come from me. It is over 100 years old. Here is more on that theory. Weston Price is a famous scientist that killed his son. He was a dentist and gave his son a root canal so he had a dead tooth in his mouth. It got infected and he died. There were no antibiotics that time. But this temporary fix (antibiotics) creates more problems later on. The main theory of this natural healing is that the body is always doing its best to heal or cure itself, but you may prevent it from doing its job.
So I had a bad tooth and it needed a root canal so I got one. Just like in the above example, it got infected, which happens sometimes. The dentist was very careful to clean it out before filling it in. I was taking the antibiotics that I was taking while waiting to get the root canal. But they were not working. My face was very swollen and the dentist said that the infection can enter the brain and kill you.
So he put me on stronger antibiotics and they were working but giving me very bad headaches so I stopped taking them. I sent a letter to the dentist telling him that I stopped taking them, against his advice, so if I should die it would not be his fault at all. Now I had some understanding of what to do based on the above theory but not enough confidence. So I called Bernarr Zovluck (a retired doctor of chiropractic). He has been eating all raw foods for 60 years, after doing a 26 day fast 60 years ago.
He said that it would cost $100 to talk to him for an hour so I accepted this. Now this guy is citizen but he was as quick thinking as a 20 year old. He told me that I should just fast which means consuming only pure water until the infection is gone. He explained that the infection is not bad (even though it can kill you) but it was just consuming excess waste in my mouth. Eating would give it more waste to eat but if you fast, then the infection would starve and die.
I asked how long it would take. He said that it will take as long as it needs to. So it took less than 4 days of fasting.
Quick Lesson About Lymphatic System or Lymphoid System
Here is a quick lesson about the lymphatic system and cardiovascular system. The blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs and gets oxygenated. Then the heart pumps the blood through the arteries to the rest of the body where the blood flows though tiny capillaries to feed the cells. Enough vitamin D also helps the cardiovascular system. See my article about Vitamin D and Cancer.
Now it gets more complex. The blood has brought nutrients like oxygen to the cells. Now it needs to pick up the waste from the cells to haul it away. A small part of this blood is brought back by the veins. But most of it is brought back as lymphatic fluid that goes through a lot of cleansing right before it joins the vein with blood before going back into the heart. Brisk walking is great to help the circulation and for the lymphatic fluid to move. Wikipedia says:
The lymphoid system is the part of the immune system comprising a network of conduits called lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph (from Latin lympha "water") unidirectionally toward the heart.
