Healthy Cheap Foods
If you have a high income, there are many healthy foods to choose from to eat. With a low income it is not as easy to eat healthy foods. One thing to do is to watch for sales. I have seen sales where the organic version of a food is cheaper than the conventional food.
If it is possible, it is better to get organic foods to avoid being killed. You have heard of genocide, fungicide and pesticide. The part of the word that is cide means to kill. So killers of fungi and pests is not healthy for you.
Although some foods are less bad for health if they are not organic. Like foods that have an outside that is not eaten are less unhealthy if they are conventional foods. Here is a list of the dirty dozen and the clean 15 to see what foods are not as bad if they are not organic. All these foods are plant-based foods or vegan foods so vegans and vegetarians can eat them.
1. Organic Bananas
You can usually buy organic bananas at less than $1 a pound. It is a very healthy food. Freelee or Freelea, the banana girl is famous for eating 30 bananas a day, She eats a raw food diet and 97% of that is fruit.
2. Organic Potatoes
You can usually buy 5 pound bags of these at less than $1 a pound. Not only the brown potatoes but you can also buy the red and golden potatoes. Like bananas, they are high in potassium. But do not boil them since a lot of the potassium will go into the water. You can steam them.
The majority of Americans consume too much sodium and not enough potassium. The foods with too much sodium are the processed foods. In other words the foods that have an ingredient list. The unprocessed foods are high in potassium. These foods do not have an ingredient list.
The only foods that have salt in them are the ones where man added the salt. Salt is not an animal or plant. It is not a food. It is a rock or chemical. WebMD.com has an article saying that consuming salt is worse for you health than smoking. See Can Salt Make You Overweight.
Do not eat the potatoes that are not organic. They are on the lists of foods that you should never eat. The farmers that grow them do not eat them. They grow potatoes separately that they eat since potatoes are very heavily sprayed. How healthy are organic potatoes
Can people live off of potatoes and margarine and nothing else for 309 days? See Potatoes and Human Health. It says:
The first such experiment was carried out by a Dr. M. Hindhede and published in 1913.
He fed three healthy adult men almost nothing but potatoes and margarine for 309 days (margarine was not made from hydrogenated seed oils at the time), all while making them do progressively more demanding physical labor. They apparently remained in good physical condition.
Here is an article about the importance of Eating and Buying Organic Food. It specifically talks about root vegetables that are not organic.
3. Organic Brown Rice and Beans
This is great combination. You can mix any type of brown rice with any kind of beans. I have bought dry organic beans in bulk section of Whole Foods for $2 a pound. But when you cook it, you get over 2 pounds of beans.
I feel that the best tasting brown rice or rice is basmati rice. Most people in India also feel this way. It grows at the base of the Himalaya mountains. You can add lots of spices to it like the Indians do.
4. Watermelons
For 2 weeks they had 8 pound watermelons on sale for $1 each. I bought 8 watermelons during those 2 weeks. But I did not eat all of them. I have 2 neighbors (a boy and a girl-- Dylan and Chandra) that are age 9 and age 6. My 4 watermelons were outside in the sun sunbathing. These kids come over and Dylan is holding a pineapple. He asks if he can trade a pineapple for a watermelon and told him that it was a good idea. So then I had 3 watermelons and a pineapple.
Then 2 days ago I had 2 cantaloupes sunbathing outside for a few hours. Then I brought them in. So Chandra comes over and asks if I can give her a cantaloupe. So I give her the best one and as she is walking away with it. I tell her that I have 4 watermelons so she can ask me for one of them in a couple of days.
A few minutes later, she is back and asks if I can give her a watermelon now. So I give her one and she asks if it is my best one. i said that I think so but it is hard to tell. Note that my grandfather lived a block from us and owned a wholesale fruit and produce business. So he brought home lots of great fruits and vegetables.
Two years ago the store had a sale on navel oranges and they were 10 cents a pound. So I bought 50 pounds of them for $5 and gave them out to my neighbors. See Health Benefits of Watermelon. They have a lot of potassium and more lycopene than tomatoes.
5. Organic Carrots
These cost under $1 a pound and some people feel that it is the best food to clean the colon. They are a great source of beta-carotene that becomes vitamin A in the body. You can also make carrot juice with it.
6. Red Jalapeno Peppers
These are more ripe than the green ones. They cost $2 a pound but they are light and you do not use much since they are so hot. All of the hot peppers are cayenne peppers. See 17 Health Benefits of Cayenne Pepper. This article has a quote from Wikipedia that says:
Cayenne pepper consumption dilates the blood vessels and speeds the metabolism due to the high amounts of capsaicin. This increases circulation and blood flow to all major organs which facilitates oxygen and nutrient delivery.
7. Green Tea or Yerba Mate Tea
These are inexpensive beverages to make since they are 98% water. You can add the herb stevia to them to sweeten them. Also you can choose how dilute or concentrated that you want them to be. Do not ask me which one is healthier. I drink both of them and both are legendary for health.
Green tea contains 4,000 chemical compound in addition to caffeine. Studies show that the more that you drink, the less chance you have of getting cancer. Foods that prevent cancer also fight cancer. It also contains EGCG. PubMed says that it helps cardiovascular health and metabolism. The theanine in it is relaxing and produces an opposite effect than the caffeine in some ways. For more on green tea, see 17 Health Benefits of Green Tea.
The yerba mate tea has a lot of chlorogenic acid in it. This is the substance or phytochemical in green coffee that makes it great for helping people to lose weight. Yerba mate may even be better for enhancing concentration than green tea. See Health Benefits of Yerba Mate Tea.
8. Organic Frozen Vegetables
You can buy different combinations of frozen organic vegetables for less than $2 a pound. When you look at vitamins and minerals in foods, they all have about the same ones since there is about dozen of each. But there are thousands of phytochemicals (plant medicines) in plant-based foods or plant foods.
This is why you want to eat different fruits and vegetables. Here are some familiar ones. Grapes and boiled peanuts contain resveratrol. Watermelon, tomatoes and red grapefruit contain lycopene. Turmeric contains curcumin.
This is also why Joel Fuhrman M.D. suggests that people eat G-BOMBS to prevent and fight diseases like cancer. G-BOMBS is an acronym like scuba (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) or laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). G-BOMBS stands for greens, berries, onions, mushrooms, beans, seeds and nuts.
